We love safety - What to do if your pet accidently ingests medication and prevention tips

Pet medications have become super palatable. Some dogs will even eat medications that aren’t that tasty. We know we should keep human and animal medications out of reach of our pets, and ideally separate, but what do we do when accidents happen?

Follow the 4 C’s 1. Check on all animals immediately for signs of poisoning 2. Collect the bottle and any remaining medication 3. Calculate how much (if any) of the medication is missing 4. Call your vet or local emergency clinic for further instructions

Additional tips to prevent accidents from happening; • place purses, backpacks, and any other bags entering the home immediately out of reach of animals • store pill containers or drugstore bags containing pills out of reach of animals at all times in the house, car, boat, etc, ideally in a closed cabinet (never on counters or the top of the fridge) • separate animal and human medications to avoid unintentional mix-ups • administer human medications in a separate room from your pets to avoid any medications (pills, liquids, lotions, etc.) from dropping on the floor and being inadvertently ingested • do not administer human medications to animals unless your veterinarian advises you to do so
